Eragon was one of the most anticipated movies of this year. It’s based on the novel by Christopher Paolini. The movie starts out with Arya (Sienna Guillory) the elf princess riding on a horse and running away from Durza aka: the Shade (Robert Carlyle); she has stolen a blue stone from the evil King Galbatorix (John Malkovich). With magic she sends the stone away into the Spine where Eragon (Edward Speleers) finds it and brings it home with him. He later discovers that the stone is a dragon’s egg, upon which it hatches and Saphira (voice by Rachel Weisz) is born. The king sends out his minions to find the dragon and rider and kill both of them. Brom (Jeremy Irons) who lives in the village that Eragon lives discovers that Eragon is a dragon rider. In order for Eragon and Saphira to be safe they set off with Brom to find the Varden, along the way Brom trains Eragon in the art of fighting and magic. While on their way to the Varden, a battle is fought, a new friend is made, a death occurs, and they manage to rescue the elf Arya who was captured and tortured by the Shade. Upon arriving at the Varden, Eragon and Saphira make their stand along with the Varden where they fight the Shade and his followers in an epic battle.

Although Eragon was one of the most anticipated movies of this year, I am sorry to say that it did not live up to that anticipation. For those of us that read the book, the movie was disappointing. The ones that have not read the book may have felt lost and confused by certain aspects of the movie. All I can tell you is to read the book it is better than the movie. I felt that for all the lack of emotion portrayed in this movie, upon reading the book you feel more for the characters then you did in the movie. The movie not only ignores a large majority of the plot, it also ignores the beauty, fantasy, struggles, and character development of the book.

Unfortunately, I give Eragon 2 ½ dragon slaying stars.
